I have melorheostosis in my left hip and foot. I have developed severe arthritis in my hip and am scheduled for total hip replacement surgery in December. My doctor has performed hip replacements for patients with Pagets disease but never on someone with melorheostosis. I am, needless to say, concerned about this.
Has anyone had total joint replacement surgery on the joint affected by the disease and, if so, what effect did it have on the disease? Thank you.

I have melorheostosis and had hip replacement surgery three years ago by Dr. Joseph Lane, Head of the metobolic bone disease service at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. I know he did the procedure differently than someone without melorheostosis as mine was also in my femor and he needed to shave some bone down. He also did some radiation after surgery to prevent the melorheostosis disease from starting up again. My bones were sent to NIH as they are a "motherload of samples from the hip" as they put it to me. My surgery went well and my pain level is much less. Your doctor can contact Dr. Lane at 212 606 1172 and if you want to call me at 203 984 7104 or email me at sdniss@optonline.net, i would be able to give you my thoughts. Good luck with your surgery - there have been very few hip replacements on individuals with melorheostosis.

sdniss, how long ago did you have the surgery and is the pain still lessened?
